International Medical Physics Certification Board

The International Medical Physics Certification Board (IMPCB) was formed on May 23rd 2010 by eleven Charter Member Organizations in medical physics. When it was formed, the objectives and purposes were:To define minimum professional standards and improve the practice of medical physics where medical physics is defined as the application of physics and related sciences to the clinical practice of medicine (including but not limited to Radiation Oncology Physics; Diagnostic Radiology Physics; Nuclear Medicine Physics; Non-ionizing Radiation Physics; Medical Health Physics; and Physiological Measurements).

The Objectives listed in the current version of the Bylaws are:

• to establish the infrastructure, requirements and assessment procedures for the accreditation of medical physics certification programs offered by Regular Members of the Board;
• to conduct examinations to test the competence of candidates for Board certification in the field of medical physics;
• to grant and issue certificates in the field of medical physics to applicants who have been found qualified by the Board;
• to maintain a registry of holders of such certificates and serve the public by preparing and furnishing lists of medical physicists who have been certified by the Board; and
• to establish a continuing education and professional development system for certified medical physicists.

As of May 2010, the following eleven organizations had resolved to be Charter Members – ABFM, ACMP, ACPSEM, CSMP, CSMPT, FMOFM, HKAMP, IMPS, KSMP, LAMP, and NAMP. Japan Society of Medical Physics also joined as an Observing Member.
